A study by the Virginia Tech Transporation Institute co-sponsored by NHTSA was performed recording data in real world vehicles with drivers. Among the results, of the over 42,000 hours of data recorded, in nearly 80% of actual crashes and 65% of near crashes, the drivers were distracted in some way within three seconds beforehand. In rear-end collisions, the drivers were distracted 93% of the time.

This article by USA Today breaks down where a barrel of oil goes. It gives insight into how dependent we are on oil. As demand for oil increases while supply decreases, not only will gas prices rise, but nearly everything else we consume will as well. This should give impetus into reducing our dependency of OIL, not just Foreign oil.

Here is a link to the top 10 leading causes of death in the U.S. for 2004. Motor Vehicle Traffic Crashes were the number one killer for ages 4 to 34 year. In terms of all ages, heart disease was the number one killer with close to 700,000 deaths, where Motor Vehicle Traffic Crashes was number 8 with 44,000 deaths.
