What is so difficult to give up?

After being home and talking with others about my Peace Corps experience I have heard from several people that they don't know if they could do it. Do it meaning giving up everything they have - their luxuries, their TV, hot water, internet, washer, dryer, etc. - and go and experience another culture for 2 years. What is so difficult to fathom? Yes, I cannot watch some of the TV shows I want to watch. But you do find a way of getting those shows and watching them on your computer. Even when we were home we only had 28 TV stations, only watched five and were content. Why should I pay $50 to flip through a hundred stations to still find nothing on the idiot box. I don't have internet at my fingertips, but when I do get it I really appreciate it. And yes, doing laundry by hand is a bitch, but it keeps me busy for a couple of hours 1-2 days a week. Why is it we cannot get away from or live without these luxuries? They're just things. You learn to manage and go on with life. In the mean time, you spend time cooking, catch up on books you've always wanted read, work in the garden, sleep in and become creative with your time.

I think it is just that people nowadays are addicted to their possessions that they have worked so hard to obtain. Paying for an education, buying a car, home, etc. is no easy feat so I feel that people tend to want to enjoy the luxuries that we earn. When people say, "I couldn't do what you guys did," is merely a way of respecting the decisions you have made and honoring you for it! It is a commendable thing to fore go the "things" and live a life that is dedicated to bettering the world or a small portion of it. :) Can't wait until Jamaica!
