Coming from the US where nearly everywhere you go there is a proper toilet (i.e., at the very least a port-a-jon), it is hard to imagine this, but it is true.  Being in Jamaica for just 5 months it is not hard to realize this.  A lot of communities in Jamaica don't have running water, so a flush toilet is difficult to come by.  Some people do have a rain water catchment systems that feed tanks that do flush toilets, but these are the more fortunate people.  We recently wrote a proposal to build six (6) double vaulted pit latrines in a community just up the road from where we live.  Let's hope we get the funding.
