OPCA and Mom

I recently went home to see my mother who is suffering from OPCA. A neurological disease that we have been dealing with for over 3 years. It is an ataxia and such her body movement and control has been increasingly compromised as time has gone on. Recently she has lost her ability to swallow and consequently lost wait. She had a feeding tube put in about three weeks ago and has gained some weight back. A speech pathologist is coming to the house three days a week to work with her and help her gain strength back so the tube can come back out and she can begin eating again. I helped feed her a couple of times and it was quite simple. It is a lot less intrusive than what I had thought - the tube does not go through the mouth or throat, rather through the stomach. Mom is determined to get the tube out and make it to Ohio in a couple of weeks when I go home. Keep on fighting mom we love you lots!!!

I hope I get to see you when you're in too! I think you may be coming to Cleveland the weekend of graduation...so it may not work out.
